Discover Lanzarote This Summer

Jet away from the indifferent summer weather in the UK this year and enjoy a sunshine break abroad.  Spain as ever remains the most popular destination for British tourists – with the Canaries one of the hottest spots.

There are no less than seven Canary Islands to choose from and Lanzarote is the fourth largest and located closest to the African coast.  The island has been popular with British tourists ever since the 1970´s and welcomes around 1.4 million visitors per year.  Yet despite this it still manages to remain largely unspoiled – with no tourist development in the north of the island at all.  And Lanzarote´s three main holiday resorts all carefully contained in the south.

There are hundreds of good quality Lanzarote hotels for tourists to choose from with four and five star options available alongside budget accommodation.  Playa Blanca, the island´s newest resort, offers the widest range of choice.  Whilst those searching for the best villas in Lanzarote should head for Puerto del Carmen, the largest resort, where there are lot of good value options.

Cheap flights to Lanzarote are now readily available from most airports in the UK – expect to pay around €200 return maximum.  With more and more low cost airlines competing on this route.  Choose from carriers such as Ryanair, Monarch and Thomas Cook.  The flight time to Lanzarote is around four hours and all services touch down at Arrecife airport.  Where arrivals will find limited facilities – for example there are no banks or bureau de changes here.

Puerto del Carmen is the biggest resort on the island and hence the spot where the majority of visitors will end up staying.  It is home to a number of excellent beaches, such as Playa Chica which proudly flies the Blue Flag for the cleanliness and safety of its sands.  Whilst the main beach of Playa Grande is perenially popular with holidaymakers.

A main central strip runs through the heat of the resort and this is where the bulk of the best bars and restaurants are located.  With everything on offer from traditional Canarian through to Chinese and Thai cuisine.

Outside of the main resorts there is an unspoilt island full of natural wonders just waiting to be discovered.  Hire a car or book a guided tour and explore the wonders of attractions such as The Timanfaya Volcano Park and the Cactus Garden.  Explore over 100 beautiful beaches and discover picturesque towns and villages.
